- Blues You Haven't Heard Before

https://www.facebook.com/andytwymanboogie

You Haven‘t Heard Before“ kennenlernen.

SHADES OF BLUE

Dänemark

Shades Of Blue.

Guitar Ray

Guitar Ray and the Gamblers

http://www.rayscona.com/?lang=en

Guitar Ray & The Gamblers are an Italian blues band founded in 2002. Since 2006, the band members have consisted of Ray Scona on vocals and guitar, Gab D on bass guitar, Henry Carpaneto on piano and Marco Fuliano on the drums. The core of the band is Ray Scona, guitarist and singer, born in 1963 in Chiavari (Genova). Scona began playing at the age of thirteen, and—30 years later—still carries his first Fender Stratocaster on tour.
The band members began collaborating with other blues performers in 2002, when they toured with Sonny Rhodes, Keith Dunn, Bill Thomas, Paul Orta and Jumping Johnny Sansone until 2004. The year the tour ended, Otis Grand produced The Gamblers' first two albums: New Sensation and Poorman Blues. In 2005 the band met Jerry Portnoy and began a collaboration that lasted for another two tours. In 2007 they contributed to the album “Hipster Blues” by Otis Grand and took part in his tour through Norway and Poland. In December 2009 the band began its first European tour as "Guitar Ray & The Gamblers," traveling through Germany, Belgium, France and Denmark.
In 2010, the band toured with Paul Reddick and Canadian singer-songwriter Roxanne Potvin through France, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Austria and Italy. In June of that year, at a festival in France, the group met Lea Gilmore, who invited the Gamblers to tour Europe with her.
That same year the band met bluesman Big Pete Pearson and began an intense collaboration. The band took part in three European tours with Pearson; two in 2011 and one in 2012. The Gamblers also played on Choose, a traditional blues album Pearson released in 2012.
In summer 2012 the band performed in Fabio Treves’ summer tour, and has since been collaborating with musicians including Jerry Portnoy, Big Pete Pearson, Keith Dunn, Otis Grand, Paul Reddick, and Lea Gilmore. They have played many blues festivals.[1]
In 2013 Guitar Ray & The Gamblers returned to the studio to record a new album, with Reddick as artistic producer. The band plans to tour with Pearson in the spring.

 Jim Bruce

Exclusive Interview With Jim Bruce

Very few people have mastered fingerstyle blues guitar like Jim Bruce.  His timing and phrasing are impeccable.  Born in Sheffield, England. Jim Bruce has traveled the world, living and working in Paris, the USA, Germany, and Denmark.  Jim is one of the few master guitarists who is also a talented teacher.
Jim was kind enough to grant DHBG an exclusive interview.
What made you start playing guitar?
When I was 14 I heard Dylan singing Times they are a-changin’ on the radio. I bought the LP and heard Don’t Think Twice fingerpicked. I was hooked – that was what I wanted to do. Don’t Think Twice was the first song I ever learned. I never strummed at all, and I’m not very good at it!
Fingerstyle blues is not everyone’s cup of tea.  What attracted you to
the style?
After playing folk until about 1973, I heard a guy in a club in the North of England play Kat’s Rag. It was simple compared to some of the stuff I was playing, but there was this superb syncopation about it. Shortly after moving down to London, I found some old Biograph Blake albums and locked myself away for 5 hours a day, for about a year, until I could play it! I suppose it’s always been the challenge that attracts me.
What’s the worst gig you ever played?
That’s a tough one – there’s so many! I can remember playing on the London Underground for hours making nothing. I still play on the street, because I like the feel of it, but back then I wanted to be noticed, not ignored. It was also nice to eat, now and again!
Bad gigs were normally in noisy bars, when no-one listens at all. Thankfully, I don’t have to do this anymore – I can choose where I play.
Funnily, when I was a kid, the worst gig was also the best. I played one song and the club owner didn’t like it – he wanted Country. It was the tradition in UK at that time to pay artists if your rejected them, so I got paid and had a nice night somewhere else!
Your style is straight ahead with a Blind Lemon feel.  Who else  influenced you?
I played only complicated ragtime for several years – Blake stuff and Scott Joplin rags. I never bothered with blues in E or A, as I thought they were too simple.
Of course, later on I realised my error. I saw a film with Lightnin’ Hopkins who didn’t play anything very complicated, but the technique and the power was completely awesome. Maybe we need time to mature. As a youngster, I just wanted to show how good I was.
No matter how well we play, none of us will ever match up to the old guys. However, we can incorporate their techniques into our music and pay homage. Thanks to Blake, Blind Boy Fuller, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Mance Liscomb, Floyd Council, Scrapper Blackwell, Reverend Gary Davis and many, many more …
DHBG: What made you start playing guitar?

Leslie & Clyde

http://www.leslieandclyde.de/

Herausgekom-
men ist mit „A World That Nobody Has Ever Seen“ (ohne Label) ein

John Németh (born 1976) is an American electric blues and soul harmonicist, singer, and songwriter. He has recorded seven albums since 2002, having also backed Junior Watson and Anson Funderburgh.[1] He has opened for Robert Cray, Keb' Mo', and Earl Thomas.[2]
Allmusic noted that he is a "vocalist with great range, ability, and soulfulness, Németh had also developed into a top-notch blues harmonica player..."[1] In 2013 alone, he was nominated five times for a Blues Music Award, making nine such nominations in total.
Németh was born in Idaho, United States and grew up in Boise.[1] After singing at his local church, Németh played in local groups in his teenage years, and later formed Fat John & the 3 Slims with his friend Tom Moore. He toured and performed regularly working between five and seven nights a week for almost a decade.[4]
By 2000, Németh was supplying backing to Junior Watson, and separately fronting his own band known as The Jacks.[1] In 2002, he self-published the album, The Jack of Harps. His debut solo effort, Come and Get It, followed in 2004.[1] The same year, Németh relocated to Oakland, California.[5][6] Gaining more experience, he temporarily replaced Sam Myers in Anson Funderburgh's backing band in 2005 and 2006.[2]
In 2006, he signed a recording contract with Blind Pig Records. Magic Touch, which was produced by Funderburgh and had Watson as a guest musician on several tracks, was issued in 2007.[1] Living Blues stated "Magic Touch gives hope that the blues will survive." The release saw Németh nominated for a Blues Music Award in the 'Best New Artist Debut' category. Németh also appeared on Elvin Bishop's The Blues Roles On album (2008), which was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Traditional Blues Album category.[5] Németh performed at the Blue Bear Live III concert on May 9, 2008 at the Great American Music Hall, to benefit the Blue Bear School of Music.[7] Németh's next release, Love Me Tonight (2009), reached number 6 in the Billboard Top Blues Albums Chart.[8]
Németh's fourth solo release, Name the Day!, was released in 2010.[1] It equalled the achievement of Love Me Tonight by peaking at number 6 in the Billboard Top Blues Albums Chart.[8] Blues Live was recorded in February 2012 at three venues in the San Francisco Bay Area, and included guitar contributions from Kid Andersen.[9] Soul Live was released in September 2012.[10] In December 2012, Németh appeared at the PowerHouse Pub in Folsom, California.[11] The following February, he performed in his home town of Boise.[12]
In 2013, Németh was nominated in five categories for a Blues Music Award. These included 'B.B. King Entertainer', 'Contemporary Blues Album', 'Instrumentalist - Harmonica', 'Soul Blues Album', and 'Soul Blues Male Artist'.[13] Németh is due to perform at the Great Lakes Blues Society in April; the Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Music Festival in May; and the Jackson Rhythm and Blues Festival in August 2013.[14] He relocated to Memphis, Tennessee in early 2013, and has stated that the Bo-Keys will back him on his next recording.[15]
Németh is sponsored by Hohner .

 The Mannish Boys Reborn

Far across the LA basin in the community of Harbor Gateway in a nondescript business park sits Ardent Audio Productions, the recording studio where Delta Groove recorded their award winning album “Double Dynamite”. Randy Chorkoff, CEO of Delta groove asked me to stop by and hang out while they were recording the new album. When I arrived everybody was outside doing a photo shoot. I saw some of the same familiar faces, including Frank Goldwasser, Kirk Fletcher,Willie Campbell, Jimmy Bott, Sugar Ray Rayford, keyboardist, Fred Kaplan, and of course, Randy Chortkoff.  Some of the new faces in the crowd including Chicago blues veteran, Steve Freund, and East Coast bluesman, Monster Mike Welch.
Steve Freund was leaving to go back to Vallejo where his house was flooded by torrential rains. He had already performed an original song for the album, “The Blues Made me Whole.” I asked him if he thought the new album would win any awards, like the last Mannish Boys album did. “I think there are some incredible musicians on this album, and yes, I do believe it will win awards, and quite possibly even a Grammy,” Freund said before leaving.
After the photo shoot, the musicians got back into the studio and started making their magic. I sat and talked with Mannish Boy’s original member, Frank Goldwasser, who has been with the group since the beginning. He said he will be performing two of his original songs, “Struggled in my Hometown,” and “Don’t Say you’re Sorry.” Frank is an incredible guitar player and singer who originated from Paris, France. He expressed his sorrow that Finis Tasby, veteran Mannish Boy, would not be performing on this album due to the debilitating stroke he suffered last year. Many of the Mannish Boys have suffered serious health problems recently.

 Kirk Fletcher Band

As a two time W.C. Handy Award nominee, who has toured with Lynwood Slim, Janiva Magness, Charlie Musselwhite and The Fabulous Thunderbirds, as well as performing with James Cotton, Pine Top Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Mojo Buford, Ted Harvey, Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Michael Landau, Elvin Bishop, Ronnie Earl, Doyle Bramhall, Michelle Branch and many more… Kirk Fletcher is considered one of the best young guitar players on the blues scene today.
Born 1975 in Bellflower California, Kirk Fletcher began playing guitar at age eight after watching his brother Walter perform at their father’s church. At age twelve he attended the Long Beach Blues Festival where he saw the likes of Albert Collins, Bobby Blue Bland, (accompanied by Wayne Bennett) and the Staple Singers. This was a life changing experience for him as he realized that this was the music he wanted to play.
While still in High School he discovered a small but legendary Los Angeles music store called Music Works, where he met owner Jim Foote, “Meeting Jim was invaluable in my search for tone and a better understanding of the mechanics of the instrument, and it was a very cool scene to be a part of....that’s how I met Jeff Rivera, who at the time was Robben Ford’s guitar tech. I got to assist him and be a fly on the wall to some of the most amazing musical events of my life up to that point....and it heightened my musicianship!” During this time he performed with R&B artist Christopher Williams and was playing gospel weekly at The House of Blues, with Brent Jones & The T.P. Mob, where he also shared the stage with such artists as Stephanie Mills and Jackson Browne.
In the Mid 90’s Kirk Fletcher met Al Blake, frontman of the Hollywood Fats Band who became a mentor to the young guitarist. Blake introduced him to wide variety of blues music,“Al hipped me to blues artists as diverse as The Mississippi Sheiks to Tommy Johnson...we’re talkin’ pre Robert Johnson stuff...that’s how far back we went..!” and it was through Blake he also met and bonded with guitarist Junior Watson, “Junior and I would get together smoke cigars, drink tequila and talk guitars...”
Around this time Kirk Fletcher met and sat in with harmonica legend Lynwood Slim, “I’m grateful to Slim for giving me a stage to play on...” and it was then that Kirk Fletcher released his first solo effort “I’m Here & I’m Gone” for the JSP Label. “It gave me a chance to pay tribute to my influences and to establish my solo career”. Kirk’s reputation was growing amongst harp players around town, and through an introduction, again, by Al Blake, Kirk sat in with Kim Wilson, and about a year later, got a call to join Kim Wilson’s Blues Review. “I played on and off with Kim for over 2 years....when he wasn’t working with the T-birds”, with the results being the Grammy nominated album “Smoking Joint”.
In 2003 Kirk Fletcher recorded his second album “Shades of Blue” and it brought him even greater attention in the blues community, “Charlie Musselwhite found out about me through blues musician Doug MacLeod......,Charlie needed a guitar player and called me”, this gig was special for Kirk, “He gave me the freedom to find my voice on the guitar”. He spent three years touring with Charlie and feels that this is where he developed his unique style.
A year later, after another call from Kim, he joined The Fabulous Thunderbirds, where he contributed to and recorded on their “Painted On” album. “I made lifelong friends in Nick, Ronnie, Jimi, Steve and Gene”. In 2007 he gave notice in order pursue his solo career, and this is when he met up with legendary guitarist and producer Michael Landau. “ We first played together at the Baked Potato in L.A., quickly became friends and really connected musically”.
In recent years Kirk Fletcher has been performing all over Europe as a headliner and occasionally touring in the U.S. with Doyle Bramhall and Michelle Branch. When home, he gives open counseling at Hollywood’s Guitar Institute of Technology.Currently he’s ready to release his third solo album, “My Turn”.

Andy Walo

Swedish export ANDY WALO loves America. his love for the States has nothing to do with the GEORGE W. BUSH PR machine and everything to do with the blues. Growing up in Sweden, WALO was given an education in rock n roll by way of his older siblings' hand-me-down record collection. It was an education that emphasized sixties rock by the likes of THE BEATLES and THE STONES and later on, an interest in LED ZEPPELIN. This was music that spoke to him in an era where techno pop ruled the airwaves and MTV.
However, his search for "that sound" had not ended. It was just beginning. ANDY read numerous interviews of various rock icons and their influences all pointed to one general direction - the blues. In time, the music spoke to him and WALO picked up a guitar and hopscotched back and forth between Scandinavia and England, making a living as a professional musician. During one gig, the members of ALBERT COLLIN's backing band witnessed a performance by WALO and shortly afterwards spent the next three days convincing this kid to come back to Chicago with them.
Here is where the love affair with the United States began. Pretty soon, WALO was sitting in with the likes of BUDDY GUY and other luminaries of the legendary Chicago blues scene. His reputation grew and grew until his playing caught the attention of the late JUNIOR WELLS. ANDY became a member of WELL's touring band and played on his last two CDs. From there, WALO set up shop in Los Angeles, eschewing celebrity-dom and the glitz and glamor of Hollywood, in favor of establishing THE ANDY WALO GROUP and recording a no-nonsense blues recording in LIVE YOUR LIFE.
ANDY WALO is currently in the process of making another CD. ROCKWIRED had the chance to speak with him over the phone. Here is how it went.

Crazy Hambones – Blues, Boogie and Roll Music
Hambone is an age-old children’s game in which fiery, rhythmic thigh-slapping drives singing shoe-shine boys on to even greater vocal heights. It also describes a mentality that blues musicians should strive for even in today’s modern times.
“Their music pays homage to the crazy and genial blues harmonica players of the past..” (Roland Salewsky, Bluesnews magazine).
The Crazy Hambones stripped down line -up of electric blues harp, electric guitar and drums means it concentrates on the essentials, drawing inspiration from the vast legacy of legends such as Muddy Walters , Walter Horton , Little Walter and Sonny Terry. Their onstage chemistry and energy leaves you in no doubt that they want you to enjoy yourselves.

The Mike Wheeler Band

http://www.mikewheelerband.com/home

Self Made Man     Mike Wheeler      2. November 2012

Most Wanted, Cadillac Dave & The Red Hot, Sam Crockwell & The Groove, Peaches Staten & The Grooveshakers.

Craig Erickson

interessanter Bluesrocker mit Tiefgang

Blues/funk guitarist Craig Erickson learned to play while working in his father's record store in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He formed his first band at 13, and began playing around the area. Erickson signed a contract with Blues Bureau Intl. in the early '90s, releasing Roadhouse Stomp! in 1992 and Retro Blues Express the following year. Though the albums featured John Onder on bass and Atma Anur on drums, Erickson's regular band -- with which he has supported blues legends such as Koko Taylor, Little Ed & the Blues Imperials, Elvin Bishop and Lonnie Brooks -- includes bassist Al Robinson and drummer Kerri Collings. Erickson recorded Two Sides of the Blues for a 1995 release, and followed up with Force Majeure one year later. He appeared on tribute albums to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert King (Hats Off to Stevie Ray, Fit for a King), and also co-wrote and played on Blues, the solo album by Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Trapeze).

Rare Tracks, Vol. Two   Craig Erickson   1. November 2013

Sandra Hall

b. c. 1948, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Hall sang from very early childhood, singing not only in church but also performing for admiring customers at her grandmother’s fish fry. From the age of 12 she sang in a duo, the Soul Sisters, with her sister Barbara Hall. From the mid-60s she sang and danced with the Exotic, a female group that sometimes opened for touring blues and soul artists visiting Atlanta, in particular at the Royal Peacock, one of the city’s leading nightclubs. Later, Hall worked as a nurse in Atlanta, singing part time, and she also raised her daughter. Reportedly, Hall also performed as a go-go dancer and stripper and if true, this element of her past might account for the emergence in her live performances of vibrant and sensual undercurrents. Unafraid to offer highly charged songs that are replete with innuendo, if not outright sexuality, Hall is perhaps best caught live although her recordings retain some of that same earthy drive.
Hall began recording in the mid-70s and successfully blended earthy blues with soaring soul. Any blues singer who takes as her billing the accolade, ‘Empress of the Blues’, has a lot to live up to and if Hall is no Bessie Smith then she is certainly worthy of a wider audience than has so far been hers although she has visited Europe where she attracted attention from fans and critics alike in Switzerland, where she sang at the Montreux Festival, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy. Songs in her repertoire include ‘Pump Up Your Love’, ‘Ball And Chain’, ‘I Got Everything I Need’, ‘One Drop Will Do You’, ‘Find You A Job’, ‘Use What You Got’ and ‘Big Long Slidin’ Thing’. In 2005 she appeared at the W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival. Hall is a friend and mentor to newcomers such as Shemekia Copeland. In addition to performing, Hall also visits schools in the south, talking about the culture of the blues and teaching blues singing.

One Drop Will Do You   Sandra Hall   2. November 2006

Use What You Got - Sandra Hall
Sandra Hall was far from a big name in the blues market when Ichiban put out "One Drop Will Do You" in 1997, but as strong as this CD is, she certainly deserved to be. Those who were fortunate enough to be aware of the album realized that Hall was a brassy, big-voiced belter along the lines of Koko Taylor. One can hear Taylor's heavy influence on such rollicking, ultra-gritty Chicago blues offerings as "Pump Up Your Love," "Boogie Woogie Fever" and "Find You a Job," which isn't to say that Hall is a Taylor clone. As prominent as Taylor's influence is, Hall is still her own person. Another high point of One Drop is "Blow Top Blues," which the famous jazz critic Leonard Feather wrote in the 1940s. While Dinah Washington's classic version was jazz-influenced, Hall approaches it in a Chess Records-like fashion. Most of the songs take a 12-bar approach, although Hall successfully moves into Southern soul territory on "Ask Me No Questions." One Drop Will Do You isn't an innovative or groundbreaking album, but it's certainly a very satisfying and inspired one. ~ Alex Henderson

 Gnola Blues Band

Eine interessante Bluesformation aus Italien

http://www.gnolabluesband.com/

Maurizio Glielmo leader and founder, the Band’s guitar and voice, comes from a long-lasting prestigious past on the Italian Blues scene. For years Glielmo toured alongside the legendary Fabio Treves in the most important Italian and International festivals.
He participated in the recording of two albums:
“Treves 3” in 1985 and “Sunday’s blues” in 1988 along with known artists such as Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones, Almann Brothers, Eric Clapton, and others), Dave Kelly (Blues Band) British Blues hero, Pick Withers (Dire Straits drummer).
Maurizio Glielmo creates “Gnola Blues Band”, officially born in 1989, with the initial aim of covering the most classic blues itineraries.
The band starts with standard interpretations (Elmore James, Muddy Waters) then moves towards the fusion of elements of tradition with interesting original compositions.
GBB is sustained by the pulsating heart of the pair Bertagna/Pavin, drum and bass respectively: a granitic rhythmic section underlying the space and light of the soloists with a special attention to the dynamics.
Roger Mugnaini offers an irreplaceable piano contribution, which elegantly accompanies Glielmo or proposes both piano and organ personal ‘solos’.
The live activity soon becomes frantic, the musical credibility solid thanks to the Band’s participation in various festivals which include International artists, as well as their
first record production “First Step” in 1991 which receives flattering reviews from critics (Il Blues, Buscadero, Fare Musica, Mucchio Selvaggio, ecc) and their second studio album “Walking through the shadows of the blues” which wins a prize as best Jazz&Blues record of the year 2000. The prize is handed by Ernesto de Pascale (Rai 2) at the Blues festival in Bordighera.
Being a profound connoisseur and expert of the use of dobro and the “slide” technique in general, Glielmo expresses this technique with personality.
This elevates him to the status of national specialist and allows him to be invited as a session-man to productions that are not solely blues.
Glielmo’s participation as a soloist in other productions continues with “Goin’ home” Rava B.B., “On the good foot” Back in Blues Band, “Vivo sulla luna” Matteo Bassi, “Grazie mille” Max Pezzali, “Madre terra” Tazenda, “E semm partii” Davide van de sfross, in the Sestri Levante Blues Festival compilation with “Key to the highway”.
During the summer of 2003 the encounter with Atlanta singer, Sandra Hall, gives birth to an intense collaboration which continues to the present day with a series of concerts in the greater festivals in Italy (of which Pistoia Blues 07) and in Europe. In the cd “Red Bone Woman”(2007), nine tracks out of eleven are signed by Glielmo, Mugnanini and Sandra Hall.
In 2006 the album “Gnola Blues Band live at Spazio Musica” was recorded in two evenings at the historical club in Pavia. This piece of work also received excellent reviews from
the main specialized magazines. During that same year Glielmo takes part in the studio session of three tracks of the “Spazio Blues” cd; a compilation of the best musicians which rotate around the mythical club in Pavia.
During the summer of 2009, Gnola Blues Band accompanies singer and guitarist Roy Roberts and tours participating in the most important Italian and European festivals.
In September 2009 Maurizio Glielmo starts recording with Jimmy Ragazzon; together, they collaborate to create “Blues, ballads and songs”, album produced by Fabrizio Scotti for
GOOD COMPANY Records. Mostly acoustic, this album re-explores traditional blues songs and presents personal readings of several cover songs.
In March 2010 the album “20 Years on the road” (GOOD COMPANY Records) was produced to celebrate the Gnola Blues Band’s 20th anniversary. The album contains pieces from previous CDs and five inedited songs.

We suggest you come to a G.B.B. concert.Line-up:
Maurizio GLIELMO - guitar, voice
Roger MUGNAINI - Keyboards, voice
Massimo PAVIN - bass
Massimo BERTAGNA - drums, percussions

The Bacon Fats

The Ben Rice Blues Band

The Ben Rice Trio has been described by outsiders as Blues Rockabilly, Swamp Rock, and Soul infused Country. Ben himself says the bands music is the kitchen sink of Blues mixed with his band mates influences of Punk, Hip-Hop, and Classic Rock. Their sound is molded by the instruments they yield. Ben playing a dobro, lap steel, and the infamous cigar box guitar. While bassist Alex McEntee blends his soulful support in the lower registers with Ryan Rustrum's big drum sound that creating a fresh yet true to an American heritage sound.
His latest album, Pour Me Some Whiskey is a testament to that. The album features songs exemplifying various sub-genres of blues. Songs like, Wreck on You a hard rocking in your face song that conjures up Johnny Cash meets Motrhead, Chop You Up a fast swinging jump blues, straight out of the West Coast tradition, Dont Worry Mama a fan favorite inspired by Reverend Gary Davis, and I Know You Love Me a song out of the Memphis soul tradition.
While their sound is unique and appeals to all kinds of music lovers, their stage presence and energy is what brings audiences regularly to their feet. In addition to Bens virtuosic slide and fret work, the rest of the band works hard to create a fun and engaging stage show.
The magnetizing energy of the Ben Rice Trio performances originates in the bands love of playing music. This energy feeds the audience and elevates the overall live music experience. The bands intermixture of musical styles ensures that each music set is interesting and engaging for listeners. The band takes great enjoyment in performing such a varied repertoire so fervently.
